Driving and Renting a Car in Prague: What to Check

A rental car is most useful when you plan to travel beyond central Prague or want a flexible route through Czechia. Before pickup, confirm your documents, parking plan, motorway access and rental conditions.

Check your driving documents before travel

Bring a valid driving licence and the identity document required by the rental agreement. Whether you also need an International Driving Permit depends on the country that issued your licence and whether its format meets the applicable road-traffic conventions. Confirm the requirement with the rental company or the relevant authority before departure; an IDP is not a substitute for the original licence.

Expect right-hand traffic and complex city streets

Traffic drives on the right. Prague includes tram corridors, one-way streets and busy intersections, while roads outside the city can be narrower. Set the route before moving and follow current signs rather than relying only on saved map data.

Plan parking in advance

Parking in much of Prague is regulated by zones, and central spaces are primarily intended for residents. Visitors can use eligible paid spaces, public garages or P+R car parks and continue by public transport. Always check the sign and current payment rules at the exact location.

Confirm motorway vignette coverage

The Czech motorway vignette is electronic and linked to the vehicle registration number. Before using a tolled motorway, confirm with the rental company that the vehicle has valid coverage. For travel outside Czechia, check each country’s current toll and vignette rules separately.

Key safety checks for Czech roads

• Do not drive after drinking alcohol; Czech rules apply zero tolerance.
• Use seat belts and the appropriate child restraint.
• Do not hold or use a phone while driving; set navigation before departure and use permitted hands-free controls.
• Follow posted speed limits, temporary restrictions and instructions from police.
• Check the rental agreement before crossing a border or adding another driver.
