Operational leasing of a sports car: what to look out for and why there is a better alternative

A sports car on monthly installments — that sounds good. Operative leasing has become the standard in the Czech Republic, companies love it and private individuals are discovering it more and more. You pay a fixed amount, the car is not your concern, and when you return it, you have peace of mind. No depreciation, no thinking about selling.

But in practice, it’s a bit more complicated. Before you sign a three-year contract — and for a sports car, it’s a three-year commitment — it’s worth knowing exactly what you’re signing. And whether there isn’t an option that makes more sense.

What is an operating lease and why do so many people want it?

An operating lease is a form of long-term rental. The car remains the property of the leasing company for the entire time, you pay a monthly payment and return it at the end of the contract. The contract is usually for 36 to 60 months.

Compared to a loan or financial leasing, the advantages are clear: lower monthly payment, no worries about selling, service or insurance is usually included in the price. That’s why companies include it in their benefits and private individuals have become fond of it as a way to drive a new car without a large one-time investment.

For a sports car, this model is particularly attractive. A Golf R or a Mercedes A 45 S for outright purchase? Easily a million and a half. Operational leasing will bring it down to a bearable monthly payment. At least on paper.

Where it starts to get messy

The offer email looks clean. The real deal is a different story.

Year-long commitment. Three years is standard. Five years is no exception. Want to leave early? A penalty that quickly shows you how much your freedom is costing you. Life situations change — new jobs, moving, other needs. The contract doesn’t take that into account.

Entry fee and deposit. Few leasing contracts really start from scratch. For a premium sports car, expect a deposit of tens of thousands of crowns before you even get behind the wheel.

Insurance — it depends on what’s included. Sometimes there is, sometimes there isn’t. Two offers with the same monthly payment can be completely different products. Read the fine print, or ask explicitly.

Kilometer limit and surcharges. The contract always includes an annual mileage limit. If you exceed it, you pay an amount for each extra kilometer that is never included in the offer. A sports car and a 15,000 km limit per year — that’s a combination that can really hurt.

Availability of a specific model. Leasing companies work with their own fleet or dealer stocks. Golf R or A 45 S? Sometimes yes, sometimes the waiting period is four to six months. And in the meantime, the offer is gone.

Two cars that are worth it

Before we move on to the alternative, let’s stop at the cars themselves. Because in this category, choice matters more than anywhere else.

The VW Golf R is a car that doesn’t scream. From the outside, it looks like a normal Golf, but under the hood it has a two-liter turbocharged engine with 333 horsepower and 4MOTION all-wheel drive. Seven-speed DSG, 0 to 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds, top speed 270 km/h. It’s a car for people who know — and don’t need to prove it to others.

The Mercedes-AMG A 45 S is different to category. Four-cylinder with 421 horsepower — the most powerful production four-cylinder in the world. AMG Speedshift DCT 8G, 4MATIC+ drive, rear spoiler. This car will not go unnoticed. Zero to a hundred in 3.9 seconds.

Both cars are available in our offer from June 15, 2026. In a limited series.

Carlove Sports: subscription instead of leasing

Carlove has been operating a car rental business in Prague for over ten years. This year we are coming up with something different: Carlove Sports — a six-month subscription for a sports car that works simply.

You choose a Golf R or an A 45 S. You sign a 6-month contract. You pay a fixed monthly amount, return the car and drive on. No three-year commitment, no entry fee, no paperwork when selling.

Prices start at 18,990 CZK/month for the Golf R and 19,990 CZK/month for the A 45 S, incl. VAT.

What is included in the monthly payment

To be clear — here is an overview of what the Carlove Sports payment includes:

A deposit of 30,000 CZK is a standard part of the contract — it is returned in full after the subscription ends. Want to drive without a deposit? This can be arranged for an additional fee.

Who does it make sense for

Carlove Sports is not for everyone — and we say that on purpose.

It is an offer for someone who wants to try a sports car without buying it or committing to a three-year commitment. Maybe they are planning a move, maybe they are dealing with a transitional period, maybe they just want a good one summer — or two. The Golf R and A 45 S are cars that people turn to. They are not IKEA cars.

If you are looking for a long-term solution for a family or company car, operational leasing probably makes sense. If you want a sports car without a long commitment and with everything included in the price, this is a more straightforward route.
