2-Day Castles Tour from Prague: Karlštejn, Hluboká and Konopiště

A 2-day castle tour from Prague is a practical way to see three very different Czech landmarks without rushing them into one long day. This route combines medieval Karlštejn, Romantic Hluboká nad Vltavou and Konopiště, the former residence of Archduke Franz Ferdinand.

The full loop is roughly 350–370 km depending on your hotel, chosen roads and detours. Check current opening hours, tour languages and ticket availability on each castle’s official website before booking the itinerary.

Route at a glance

Day 1: Prague to Karlštejn

Karlštejn was founded by Charles IV and remains one of the country’s best-known medieval castles. The drive from Prague is about 40 km, but arrival takes longer than the road time suggests.

The town has one central public car park on the left bank of the Berounka, approximately 2 km from the castle. Allow about 30 minutes for the uphill walk. The historic centre is pedestrianised, so do not plan to drive to the gate.

If the Chapel of the Holy Cross is your priority, reserve the exclusive castle-chapels tour in advance. Official guidance requires a booking for every visitor and capacity is limited. Other routes have different rules, times and seasonal operation.

Karlštejn to Hluboká nad Vltavou

Continue south for roughly 150 km. Traffic and the exact route can change the journey, so use live navigation and leave a buffer after your timed Karlštejn tour.

Hluboká is a major Romantic castle complex with preserved interiors and a large park. Select a current guided route according to its seasonal schedule; the castle also operates a winter route, but access to individual rooms varies through the year.

Stay in Hluboká nad Vltavou for a quiet evening or in nearby České Budějovice for a wider choice of hotels and restaurants.

Day 2: Hluboká to Konopiště

After breakfast, drive about 115 km towards Benešov. Konopiště offers several guided circuits, and some specialised routes require prior reservation. Match your arrival to the route you actually want to visit.

The main paid car park is approximately 600 m below the castle; a smaller paid area near the pond dam is about 300 m away. Availability can change, so allow time to park and walk.

The landscaped park is open year-round, while the rose garden and greenhouse have seasonal opening periods. Treat them as an optional stop and check the current schedule.

Return to Prague

Konopiště is roughly 50 km from Prague. Plan the return with live traffic rather than relying on a fixed duration, especially on Sunday evening or during road works.
