Do you need an International Driving Permit to rent a car in Europe?
Short answer: an EU or EEA driving licence is valid across the EU. For a licence issued outside the EU/EEA, the answer depends on the licence format, the conventions it follows and the rules of every country on your route. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is a supplement to your valid national licence – never a replacement for it.
Valid EU or EEA licence
You can use a valid EU driving licence throughout the EU. A provisional or temporary licence may not be recognised.
Licence conforming to an international convention
Czechia recognises valid third-country licences whose format complies with the 1949 Geneva or 1968 Vienna Convention. If the document cannot be readily understood, carry the translation or supporting permit required by the applicable rules.
Non-conforming third-country licence
Czech rules generally require the corresponding international permit together with the original national licence. Japan, the Republic of Korea and the UAE are addressed separately in Czech official guidance, so do not rely on a generic country list.
Rules can change and a journey from Prague may cross several jurisdictions. Verify the current requirements for Czechia and every destination country before collecting the car.
What to bring when collecting a rental car
- Your valid original national driving licence.
- An IDP where required. It is valid only together with the national licence.
- Your passport or accepted identity document and the documents required by the rental conditions.
- Documents for every driver. Additional drivers must meet the same licence requirements.
How to check your licence correctly
Use the issuing authority and official destination-country guidance – not the alphabet alone.
1. Was it issued in the EU or EEA?
A valid EU licence is recognised across the EU. Check its expiry date before travel; provisional documents are different.
2. Was it issued outside the EU or EEA?
Check whether the licence itself conforms to the Geneva 1949 or Vienna 1968 model and whether Czech law requires an accompanying IDP.
3. Will you drive outside Czechia?
Austria, Germany, Italy or another destination may apply its own recognition rules. Confirmation for Czechia alone is not enough for a cross-border itinerary.
4. Is the document readable and valid?
The name, categories, issue and expiry information must be clear. Carry any certified translation or supporting document required by the competent authority.
Do not buy an unofficial “digital IDP”
An IDP must be issued by an authority or organisation authorised by the country that issued your national licence. A downloadable translation sold by an unrelated website is not automatically a legally valid permit.

Frequently asked questions
Is an IDP enough on its own?
No. An international permit supports the corresponding valid national driving licence and does not replace it.
Does a licence printed in Latin letters automatically work?
No. Readability is only one consideration. The issuing country, the licence format and the law of the country where you drive all matter.
Does the rental desk decide whether an IDP is legally required?
No. The driver must comply with the law. A company handing over a car does not change the recognition rules applied by public authorities.
Should I check again when crossing a border?
Yes. Confirm the requirements of every country on the route, even when the car was collected legally in Prague.
