Renting a Car in Czechia with a US License: IDP Guide

Can you rent a car in Czechia with a US driving license? Usually yes, provided the licence is valid for the vehicle category and you also meet the rental company’s age, identity, payment and document requirements. For a short visit, a traveller from the United States should obtain an International Driving Permit (IDP) before leaving the US and carry it together with the original state-issued licence.

US driving license and International Driving Permit for renting a car in Czechia

An IDP is not a separate driving licence

An International Driving Permit is a standardised translation of information from your national driving licence. It is valid only when presented with the original licence. A photograph, photocopy or digital image is not a substitute for the physical documents requested at handover.

Official Czech guidance recognises licences and international permits that follow the applicable Geneva 1949 or Vienna 1968 road-traffic conventions. The Czech Embassy in Washington advises US visitors driving in Czechia to carry an accepted international permit with their US licence. Obtain the IDP from an authorised issuer in the United States before travel; Czech authorities do not issue a Czech IDP as a replacement for a visiting American driver’s US document.

Documents to bring to the rental desk

Names and dates should be consistent across the reservation and documents. If a licence is temporary, damaged, expired, restricted or not written in Latin characters, contact the rental company before paying.

Rental approval and legal permission are different

A document may be recognised for driving while a rental company still applies its own age, licence-holding-period, deposit, payment-card or vehicle-class rules. Conversely, accepting a reservation online does not prove that every document will be valid at handover. Send questions in advance and request written confirmation.

Long-term residents and visitors staying beyond a normal tourist trip may be subject to different exchange or residence rules. This page is practical information for short-term visitors, not individual legal advice.

Driving outside Czechia

If you plan to enter Germany, Austria, Poland or another country, confirm that cross-border travel is permitted under the rental agreement. The destination country may apply different licence, vignette, environmental-zone and equipment rules. Carry the vehicle papers supplied at handover and keep both the US licence and IDP with you.

Before you book

  1. Check that your US licence remains valid throughout the rental.
  2. Obtain the IDP before leaving the United States.
  3. Read the current CARLOVE rental conditions.
  4. Confirm the driver’s age, licence history, payment method and border plans.
  5. Bring every original document to handover.
