4-Day Czech Republic Road Trip from Prague: A Realistic Route
This route was inspired by a TrovenTrip journey with CARLOVE and has been updated with current planning, parking and ticket guidance.
A 4-day Czech Republic road trip from Prague should leave enough time for timed castle tours, pedestrian historic centres and the long transfer to South Bohemia. This route avoids trying to visit Karlštejn and Český Krumlov on the same sightseeing day.
Route at a glance
- Day 1: Prague → Kutná Hora → Český Šternberk → Prague.
- Day 2: Prague → Karlštejn → Český Krumlov.
- Day 3: Český Krumlov without a long transfer.
- Day 4: Český Krumlov → optional Hluboká nad Vltavou → Prague.
The loop is roughly 550–620 km depending on your hotel, roads and optional stops. Check live navigation and official opening times rather than treating any fixed duration as guaranteed.
Day 1: Kutná Hora and Český Šternberk
Drive east from Prague to Kutná Hora. The Sedlec Ossuary has limited capacity and uses tickets for a specific date and time. Buy through the official service or at the Sedlec Information Centre, then allow separate time for St Barbara’s Church and the historic centre.
Sedlec and the old town are in different parts of Kutná Hora. Choose parking for the sight you are visiting instead of expecting one space to serve the entire city.
Continue to Český Šternberk only if its official opening schedule and a suitable tour time are available. Return to Prague for the night so the next morning can start early.
Day 2: Karlštejn and transfer to Český Krumlov
Karlštejn is about 40 km from Prague. The town’s central car park is on the left bank of the Berounka, approximately 2 km from the castle. Allow about 30 minutes for the uphill walk; the historic centre is pedestrianised.
If you want the Chapel of the Holy Cross, reserve the exclusive castle-chapels tour in advance. Official rules require a booking for every visitor and capacity is limited.
After the tour, continue to Český Krumlov. This is the longest transfer of the itinerary, so avoid adding another major attraction. Arrive, check in and leave the car at an authorised visitor car park.
Day 3: Český Krumlov
Spend a full day in the UNESCO-listed historic town and castle complex. The centre is a pedestrian zone with special vehicle-entry rules. Official visitor parking includes P1, P2, P3, P5 and P7, with live availability and changing tariffs.
Select castle interiors and tours according to the current seasonal schedule. Leave time for the old town, river viewpoints and the castle grounds instead of rushing back to the car.
Day 4: Hluboká and return to Prague
For an extra stop, drive to Hluboká nad Vltavou. The Romantic castle complex has original furnishings and a large park, but individual tour routes operate on seasonal schedules. If tickets or timing do not fit, return directly to Prague.
Use live traffic for the final drive and leave a buffer before the agreed car-return time.
