Jeseníky and Praděd by Car from Prague: Mountains, Spa Towns and Quiet Trails
Jeseníky is one of Czechia’s highest mountain regions, with Praděd rising to almost 1,500 metres. Open ridges, spruce forests, waterfalls and spa villages such as Karlova Studánka make it a rewarding weekend destination. Allow roughly three and a half to four hours from Prague on the selected route in normal conditions, plus stops and delays. A car gives you flexibility to choose walking-route starting points and explore at your own pace.
Plan the final stretch carefully: road access is regulated, and an ordinary visit to the summit continues on foot from Ovčárna. Do not simply set your navigation to the top. If you are considering other mountain destinations, compare this trip with Krkonoše, or for a different kind of nature, Šumava.~270 km

The route: Prague to Jeseníky by car
The checked route via the D11 from the selected Prague starting point to Karlova Studánka or the Hvězda car park is about 270 kilometres. Alternative routes can be substantially longer. Check current directions to your car park, allowing for roadworks, diversions and your exact departure address. The final roads are slower and winding, so leave extra time, particularly at weekends and in winter. Set your destination to the car park, not the summit.
What to see in Jeseníky
1
Praděd and its tower
The summit is the highest point in Moravia and Czech Silesia, topped by a broadcasting tower with an observation platform. Check the current opening hours and ticket information before you plan the climb.
2
Karlova Studánka
A small spa village in the forest, known for its clean air and quiet paths. A calm base for a night or two, and the usual starting point for Praděd.
3
Bílá Opava waterfalls
Marked paths follow the Bílá Opava stream and its waterfalls. Some sections are demanding, with steps, ladders and potentially slippery rocks. The gorge is not automatically a safe fallback when the weather deteriorates on the summits. Choose a route that suits your fitness, the forecast and current trail conditions.
4
Ridge walks
The open ridges offer wide views, but not every hike is easy. Distance, elevation gain and exposure to wind and changing weather affect the difficulty. Bring warm layers and waterproofs, and adapt your plans to the conditions.
Before you drive up: the road from Hvězda to Ovčárna has regulated access times, limited capacity and charges. Check current rules and bus timetables. It is often simpler to park at Hvězda and take the bus to Ovčárna. This bus does not continue to the summit of Praděd.
Best time to go
Late spring to early autumn offers many opportunities for hiking, although snow can linger higher up. September and October bring autumn colours. In winter, Jeseníky attracts skiers and other visitors looking for snow activities. Access restrictions at Ovčárna are not limited to snowy days: always check current rules and weather. Before a winter trip, ask CARLOVE about suitable equipment for your dates and route.Which car for the trip
A comfortable estate or SUV suits the long drive and mountain roads: the Škoda Superb, the Renault Austral and the Volvo V60 are good options. Child seats are free of charge. Planning more trips? See our best day trips from Prague by car.FAQ
