Car Rental in Prague Without a Credit Card: How It Works
Renting a car in Prague without a credit card
The credit card requirement is the quietest way a rental booking falls apart. You compare prices, you book, you fly in, and at handover someone asks for a credit card in the main driver's name with enough limit to cover a four figure hold. If you do not carry one, the conversation is over.
A debit card is enough at CarLove, and with GOLD insurance no deposit is taken at all. This page explains how the deposit actually works, why prepaid cards usually fail, and what to have ready so that nothing goes wrong at the door.

Why the industry asks for a credit card
It has nothing to do with paying for the rental. You can pay for that almost any way. The credit card is about the deposit, and specifically about a banking mechanism called a pre-authorisation.
A pre-authorisation is a hold, not a charge. The rental company tells your bank to set aside a sum for a period of time. Nothing is taken. When you bring the car back undamaged, the hold is released and the money was never really gone.
Hold on a credit card
Against your credit limit
Sits against your credit limit. Your own money is untouched. Usually released at final settlement.
Hold on a debit card
Against your balance
Sits against your balance. That money is unavailable while you travel, and release typically takes one to five working days after return.
That difference is the entire reason for the industry rule. Debit holds are slower to unwind and generate more support calls, so many companies simply refuse them. It is an operational preference rather than a legal requirement.
Three ways it works at CarLove
There are only three combinations, and the third one removes the problem completely.
Debit card
Deposit held
The hold sits on your account for the rental period and is released after you return the car, typically within one to five working days.
Credit card
Deposit held
The hold sits against your limit rather than your balance, and normally clears as soon as the rental is settled.
Any card + GOLD
No deposit
Nothing is held on any card. The excess also drops to zero on bodywork, glass, tyres, wheels and theft.
GOLD is available from 20 euros a day. If the deposit is the thing standing between you and the booking, it is often cheaper than you expect once you price it across a whole trip. The comparison of BASIC, SILVER and GOLD sets out what each level changes, and our insurance guide explains it in full.
The clause every rental contract has
One thing should be said plainly rather than hidden in the small print, because you will find a version of it in the terms of every rental company in Europe.
CarLove reserves the right to request a credit card, or to decline a rental, at its own discretion and without stating a reason. Accepting debit cards is the standard policy and it applies to the great majority of bookings, but it is not an unconditional guarantee for every case.
Every rental company in the market holds the same reservation, because handing over a car worth tens of thousands of euros to someone who arrived an hour ago is a decision with real risk attached. Most companies bury the clause. It is more useful to know it is there.
What this means in practice is simple. Treat the debit card policy as the normal route rather than a contractual promise, and if you have a credit card, bring it as a backup even if you do not intend to use it. Full terms are in the rental conditions.
Prepaid and app based cards
Revolut, Wise and similar cards are the most common reason a booking still runs into trouble, and the reason is technical rather than a matter of policy.
Many of these accounts cannot process a pre-authorisation hold in the way a bank issued debit or credit card does. Some hold nothing at all, some release the hold immediately, some decline the transaction outright. From the rental side there is no way to secure a deposit against them, so they are generally not accepted for that purpose.
The clean solution: take GOLD. With no deposit to secure, the question of what your card can and cannot hold never arises, and a prepaid card is fine for paying the rental itself.
Requirements do vary between issuers, so if a prepaid card is genuinely all you have, say so when you book rather than at handover.
What to have with you
Driving licence
Required
EU licences are accepted as they are. Outside the EU, check whether your country needs an International Driving Permit.
Passport or EU ID card
Required
For identity verification at handover.
A card in the main driver's name
Required
Debit or credit. A card belonging to a partner or parent does not work, even if they are present.
Age 21 or over
Required
For some premium cars the minimum age is higher.
The name on the card catches more people out than anything else on this list. The deposit has to be secured against the person who signs the rental agreement, so a joint trip where one person drives and another pays does not work at the counter.
Three things that avoid a bad handover
1
Tell your bank you are travelling
A four figure hold from a foreign merchant is exactly the pattern fraud systems block. A card that works fine for coffee can decline the deposit. Two minutes in the banking app prevents it.
2
Check the available balance, not the account balance
The hold needs headroom on top of whatever you plan to spend on the trip. A debit card with just enough for the rental itself will not clear the deposit.
3
Ask what the deposit is for your car before you book
It depends on the class of vehicle. Knowing the figure in advance turns the deposit from a surprise into a line in your budget, and often makes the case for GOLD on its own.
What else comes with the car
The payment method changes nothing about what you get. Every rental includes the same things.
Delivery to Prague addresses and to Václav Havel Airport is available as an optional extra when arranged in advance. Rentals start from 19 euros a day, and the fleet of 200+ cars includes automatic models, none older than two years.
FAQ
Can I rent a car in Prague with only a debit card?
Yes. Debit cards are accepted for the deposit, and with GOLD insurance no deposit is taken at all. Note that CarLove, like every rental company, reserves the right to request a credit card or decline a rental at its own discretion, so bring a credit card as a backup if you have one.
Why do rental companies want a credit card in the first place?
Because of the deposit, not the rental payment. A hold on a credit card sits against your credit limit and clears quickly. The same hold on a debit card takes your own money out of reach and takes longer to release, so many companies avoid the complication by refusing debit entirely.
How large is the deposit and when do I get it back?
It depends on the class of car and is confirmed when you book. On a debit card the release usually takes one to five working days after you return the vehicle, depending on your bank. On a credit card it normally clears as soon as the rental is settled. With GOLD there is no deposit to release.
Are Revolut, Wise and other prepaid cards accepted?
Generally not for the deposit, because many of them cannot process a pre-authorisation hold the way a bank issued card does. They are fine for paying the rental itself. If a prepaid card is all you have, take GOLD and the question does not arise, and tell us when you book rather than at handover.
Can my partner pay with their card if I am the driver?
The card used for the deposit has to be in the name of the person who signs the rental agreement, even if the cardholder is standing next to you. This catches out more travellers than any other requirement.
Why might a card be declined for the deposit even with money in the account?
A large hold from a foreign merchant is a classic fraud pattern, so bank security systems often block it. Telling your bank you are travelling before you fly usually prevents this. Also check the available balance rather than the account balance, since the hold needs headroom on top of your spending money.
Can a rental be refused even if I meet all the requirements?
CarLove reserves the right to request a credit card or to decline a rental at its own discretion and without stating a reason. Every rental company in Europe holds the same reservation. Accepting debit cards is the standard policy and applies to the great majority of bookings, but it is not an unconditional guarantee.
Does a foreign debit card work?
Yes. International Visa and Mastercard debit cards issued outside the Czech Republic are accepted.
What is the minimum age?
The minimum age is 21. For some premium cars it is higher, so check the car page before you book.
