Christmas Markets 2026 from Prague by Car: Dates, Routes and Tips

From late November the whole region turns into one big Christmas market. Prague itself opens on 28 November, and within a three to four hour drive you can reach Dresden, Vienna, Nuremberg, Munich and Salzburg. A rental car lets you leave when you want, carry the shopping home and visit two markets in one trip. Dates below come from published 2026 schedules, so always check the official site before you go.

Which route to choose

1
Dresden, the easy day trip
Two hours on the D8 and A17 gets you to Germany’s oldest Christmas market. Leave early, park outside the centre and use the tram. See also our Prague to Dresden road trip.
2
Vienna, the classic
Allow about four hours and roughly 340 km via Brno and Mikulov, following the D1, D52/I52 and A5. The Rathausplatz market is the biggest, and the Schönbrunn and Belvedere markets are a short ride away. Austria needs a motorway vignette. Our Prague to Vienna guide has the details.
3
Nuremberg and Munich, the Bavarian weekend
Combine the Christkindlesmarkt and Marienplatz in one weekend with a night in between. Both cities have low-emission zones, so read our guide to low-emission zones first.
4
Salzburg, for a longer trip
The longest drive on the list, best as an overnight trip combined with the Alps. Check the weather and use the winter tyres we fit for you.

Driving in winter: what to know

In the Czech Republic winter tyres are required from 1 November to 31 March when there is continuous snow, ice or frost, or where a blue sign says so. With CarLove, cars rented in this period come with Alpine snowflake winter tyres at no extra charge, and the Czech motorway vignette is included. Read more in our winter car rental guide. Practical tips

Park outside the centre
Old towns are busy and often restricted. Use a park-and-ride or a garage on the edge and walk or take a tram.
Go on a weekday
Weekends and the weeks before Christmas are the most crowded. Mornings are calm.
Bring a family car
An estate or an SUV fits shopping bags and a child seat easily. Child seats are free of charge.
