New Year’s Eve 2026 from Prague by Car: Where to Go and How to Drive
New Year’s Eve is a great moment to be on the road, as long as you plan where the car sleeps. Prague is easy to explore on foot, and the best idea is to leave the car at your hotel or a garage outside the centre. If you want a bigger party, Vienna is three hours away and runs a huge free street event. This guide focuses on the driving side: what to book, where to park and what to avoid.

New Year’s Eve in Prague
Local guides say Prague has no official city fireworks display, but the squares fill up with people at midnight. Popular places include Old Town Square, Wenceslas Square, Charles Bridge, Petřín hill and Letná park. Streets in the centre are crowded and some are closed, so do not plan to drive in the Old Town after dinner.
1
Park outside the centre
Use your hotel garage or a car park on the edge of the centre and take the tram or metro in.
2
Do not drive after drinking
Czechia has zero alcohol tolerance for drivers. Use a taxi or public transport.

Roads are quiet on New Year’s Day, which makes it a good day for a trip out of town. See our best day trips from Prague.
New Year’s Eve in Vienna
Vienna’s Silvesterpfad is a free street event in the Innere Stadt. In recent years it has run from 14:00 on 31 December until about 02:00, with stages around Rathausplatz, Stephansplatz, Am Hof, Hoher Markt, Graben and Karlsplatz. Check the official programme for 2026 before you travel.
Do not drive into the Innere Stadt. Several streets are pedestrian-only during the event.
Park outside the centre and take the U-Bahn, which runs all night on New Year’s Eve. On 1 January it runs a reduced schedule.
Most inner districts of Vienna have paid short-term parking zones, so check the signs.
