Winter is ball season in Vienna. From the end of the Christmas markets until the end of carnival the city fills with waltz, evening gowns and tails, and the biggest event of all is the Vienna Opera Ball. In 2027 it takes place on Thursday 4 February at the State Opera. Vienna is only about three hours from Prague, so a rental car makes a comfortable weekend trip. Even if you do not attend a ball, the winter city is worth the drive.

What to know about the Vienna ball season
Vienna holds many balls, usually between November and February, from large events in the Hofburg and the Rathaus to smaller university and professional balls. The Opera Ball is the most famous. Tickets, dress code and programme are published by the organisers, so check the official State Opera website and book early. For an earlier winter visit, the Christmas market on Rathausplatz is announced for 13 November to 26 December 2026. It will no longer be open during the February Opera Ball.

Buy the Austrian vignette
Digital or sticker. Buy it before you enter Austria. Your Czech vignette does not cover it.

Park outside the centre
Most inner districts have paid short-term parking zones. A hotel garage or a car park on the edge of the centre is easier, then take the U-Bahn.

Dress up, take a taxi or the U-Bahn, and enjoy the evening. Never drive after drinking.

The Vienna Opera Ball takes place on Thursday 4 February 2027 at the Vienna State Opera. The event on 3 February at 20:00 is the dress rehearsal, not the ball. Check the official State Opera website for admission times, tickets and the programme.
How long is the drive from Prague to Vienna?
About three hours, roughly 300 km, mostly on motorway. Allow extra time in winter and on Friday evenings.
Do I need a vignette for Austria?
Yes. Austria requires a motorway vignette, digital or sticker. The Czech vignette is included in your CarLove rental, but the Austrian one is not.
Should I drive into central Vienna on ball night?
It is better not to. Parking in most inner districts is paid and limited, and the streets around the Opera are busy. Park at your hotel or a garage and use the U-Bahn or a taxi.
Can I drive to Vienna with a CarLove car?
